World Humanitarian Day: N-HYPPADEC Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Vulnerable Communities
By Hajara Muhammad Sambo
The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities through targeted humanitarian interventions and long-term environmental resilience programs.
The commitment was reaffirmed in Minna during the commemoration of World Humanitarian Day, organized jointly by the Niger State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and N-HYPPADEC.
Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, the Head of Press and Public Affairs, Nura Tanko Wakili, emphasized that meaningful humanitarian action must go beyond immediate disaster response.
”Humanitarian action should go beyond disaster response to include proactive prevention, preparedness, and disaster-risk reduction,” Yelwa stated. He noted that recurring issues such as flooding, erosion, and other environmental challenges continue to threaten lives, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure across the commission’s host areas.
To address these vulnerabilities, Yelwa advocated for stronger, coordinated partnerships involving government bodies, local authorities, development organizations, traditional institutions, and host communities to build safer environments while advancing N-HYPPADEC’s people-centered development agenda.
Also addressing the gathering, Mairo Mohammed Mann, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice overseeing the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, reminded attendees that World Humanitarian Day honors personnel who have lost their lives in service to humanity. She urged the public to cultivate a culture of supporting individuals in need throughout the year, rather than solely during formal commemorations.
As part of the day’s humanitarian efforts, N-HYPPADEC presented a donation of personal hygiene items, detergents, and cleaning supplies—including tissue paper and Hypo—to the Old Correctional Centre in Minna.
