FG Begins Distribution of Electric Vehicles to Civil Servants, Expands Clean Energy Ecosystem

The Federal Government has taken delivery and commenced the distribution of the first batch of electric vehicles (EVs) promised to civil servants. The move is part of targeted national efforts to promote sustainable energy usage, reduce commuting costs, and modernize Nigeria’s automotive landscape.
The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, disclosed the development at the State House following a high-level meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
Describing the rollout as the initial phase of a broader clean-energy transition, Osanipin noted that the government has simultaneous projects underway to prepare the nation’s technical infrastructure. To support alternative-energy adoption and foster local technical expertise, the administration has already deployed EV charging infrastructure across 16 universities nationwide.
Alongside the electric vehicle initiatives, the federal government reported significant momentum in its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) drive. Private sector confidence in alternative fuels has surged, with the number of companies licensed to retail gas expanding from just four previously to 81 companies today.
While pointing out that the shift to cheaper alternative energy is already driving down operational expenses for fleet operators, Osanipin stressed that the government’s immediate priority is ensuring these savings trickle down to ordinary citizens.
”The next phase of our intervention will focus on monitoring and ensuring that the financial savings from cheaper alternative fuels directly translate into lower transport fares for Nigerian commuters,” Osanipin said, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to mitigating transport-driven inflation.
