A Ghanaian court has ordered that a Nigerian man, Maazi Augustine, be remanded in police custody over his alleged involvement in a foiled bank robbery operation in the Labone area of Accra.
Augustine, who pleaded not guilty to eight counts, including conspiracy to commit robbery, appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, which ordered that he remain in police custody until September 2, 2026, when he is expected to appear again.
Diaspora Tales learnt that Augustine was arrested on August 13 after the Ghana Police Service said it foiled a plot to rob three banks in Labone: GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank.
According to the police, a gang was preparing to attack the banks, after which the personnel deployed in the area later spotted the suspected gang members in vehicles parked near the banks.
The police said one of the vehicles sped away after its occupants noticed the officers, leading to a chase that ended with Augustine’s arrest, while another occupant escaped.
It added that occupants of the second vehicle attempted to flee while firing at the police, resulting in a shootout in which two suspects were killed.
A Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17, and a pistol were reportedly recovered.
However, the police account has been disputed, as GCB Bank said no robbery or attempted robbery took place at its Labone branch.
In a statement also shared on X shortly after the police announcement, it said, “GCB Bank wishes to clarify that no robbery or attempted robbery took place at our Labone Branch or on the Bank’s premises.
“At no point was the branch breached, and no customer, member of staff, funds or property of the Bank was affected. The Labone Branch remains secure, and customers can continue to conduct their banking transactions with confidence.”
Despite the concerns, Augustine is expected to remain in police custody pending his next court appearance on September 2.
