A Law graduate of the Lagos State University, David Akinwunmi, has secured admission in a Canadian university, with scholarship and tuition support just a few months after completing his Bachelor of Laws degree.

The graduate received the offer from the University of Victoria in British Columbia.

This was contained in the official confirmation letter from the institution sighted by Diaspora Tales on Thursday.

Akinwunmi, who has already commenced the programme in Canada, received the Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarship and Law Foundation Scholarship, totaling about CAD $45,000 over two years.

Speaking with our correspondent, Akinwunmi said, “Receiving this level of support has been particularly encouraging to me because it is an affirmation of the work I have put into my academic development and the confidence that the institution has placed in me.”

He added that his research at the University of Victoria would focus on a comparative analysis of Nigeria’s and Canada’s tax laws and tax administration, with particular attention to how Canada has incorporated indigenous tax systems, principles and perspectives into its modern tax and fiscal administration.

He noted that he would examine ways Nigeria could improve voluntary tax compliance by making aspects of tax administration more familiar and culturally acceptable to Nigerians.

“I want to understand the Canadian experience and consider the lessons that may be useful to Nigeria. I want to understand the Canadian experience and consider the lessons that may be useful to Nigeria. I consider the research particularly important at this time because Nigeria is going through a new phase of tax reform which has generated significant attention across the country. Taxation is something that ultimately affects virtually every citizen, so I believe there is a need to continue looking at ways of making the system more effective, inclusive and responsive to the people.

“One of the issues I intend to examine is how Nigeria can increase voluntary tax compliance among its citizens. I am interested in whether the introduction of certain administrative elements that people find indigenous, familiar, and culturally acceptable could make the tax system more relatable to citizens and encourage greater willingness to comply.

“The intention is not simply to compare Nigeria and Canada for the sake of comparison. I want the research to identify practical lessons from the Canadian experience that could contribute to discussions about tax administration, compliance and governance in Nigeria,” he added.
