Niger State Assembly Oversight Committee Inspects Capital Projects,Issues Warnings to Contractors

By Yahaya Zakka, Minna

The Standing Committee on Works and Infrastructure of the Niger State House of Assembly conducted its first comprehensive oversight visit to ongoing capital projects scheduled for 2026.

During the inspection, the committee issued a strong warning to contractors neglecting their sites after receiving payments, stating that such misconduct could lead to contract revocation.

Led by Chairman Hon. Arc. Abubakar Suleiman Gomna, the delegation reviewed several road projects overseen by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. Key sites included the Minna Township Road projects managed by Global Legend and CCECC, and the 50-kilometer Mararaban Dan Daudu–Gwada–Kuta–Rafin Kuka–Zumba road in Shiroro Local Government Area.

In Shiroro, Hon. Gomna praised Messrs. Maritalia Nigeria Limited for making over 34 percent progress before full mobilization. He also highlighted the company’s excellent track record, noting it was the first contractor to fully complete a project, a 5-kilometer road in Munya LGA—under the current administration.

Site engineer Engr. Yakubu reported that the ₦48 billion Shiroro road contract, awarded on March 3, 2026, is expected to finish within 12 months. The project has reached 37 percent in earthworks and 30 percent in concrete structures.

While acknowledging the significant payments made by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to project contractors, Hon. Gomna expressed concerns over contractors who have yet to return to their sites after receiving public funds.

“When a contractor is awarded a contract worth billions of naira and receives a substantial portion of the funds without demonstrating visible progress, the House will invoke its constitutional powers,” Gomna stated. He also warned that non-compliant contractors risk regulatory actions, including summons and potential contract revocation.

The committee has instructed all contractors to submit pending technical and integrity assessment reports to ensure proper use of public resources. After the inspection, the committee will draft an interim report for the Assembly, recommending the summoning of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and any contractors found to be non-compliant.
