Niger Government, Stakeholders Urge Peaceful Coexistence and Education at 2026 Pastoralists’ Day

Stakeholders in the agricultural and livestock sectors emphasize the importance of peaceful coexistence, improved access to education, and modern livestock management to promote long-term stability and economic growth in Niger State.
The call was made during the 3rd Anniversary and 2026 Pastoralists’ Day celebration held at the Siyam Event Center in Minna, which brought together senior government officials, pastoralist leaders, scholars, and members of the local herding community.
Delivering a speech on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba praised pastoralists for their vital role in Nigeria’s livestock and meat economy. He encouraged them to foster harmonious relationships with local farming communities, respect local leadership, and abandon outdated practices that cause conflicts.
Garba reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to creating a support system that integrates pastoralists into the broader agricultural development plans of the state.
Also speaking to the gathering, Hon. Umar Sanda Rabe, Commissioner for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs, commended Governor Bago’s foresight in establishing the dedicated ministry. He urged farmers and herders to avoid self-help and resolve disputes through proper authorities.
In his remarks, Alhaji Baba Othman Ngelzarma, National Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), called on pastoralist families to prioritize both Western and Islamic education for their children. He emphasized that education is a key tool for steering youth away from social vices and criminal activities. Ngelzarma also urged the government to officially designate and develop grazing reserves to reduce farmer-herder clashes and support sustainable livestock production.
The event included an academic presentation on how armed banditry is changing social structures and traditional values within Fulani communities in the state.
The celebration ended with a joint pledge by government officials and community representatives to strengthen collaboration aimed at improving security, social harmony, and sustainable livestock management.
