Tragedy in Minna: NUJ Calls for Independent Investigation into the Death of 37 Miners

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, has called for a thorough and independent inquiry into the recent death of 37 miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, the state capital.
In an official statement issued by the Council’s State Secretary, Comrade Usman Chiji, the union expressed profound shock at the incident. It emphasized the need to determine the exact circumstances and underlying causes of the fatalities.
While commending Niger State Governor Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago for quickly establishing an investigative panel, the NUJ urged the government to implement the panel’s recommendations to fully prevent future tragedies.
The union also raised concerns about detainee rights, regulatory enforcement, and socioeconomic issues within the state’s mining sector.
It urged security agencies to ensure arrest, detention, and prosecution procedures adhere to constitutional and international human rights standards.
Furthermore, the statement called for a dual approach—combating illegal mining through law enforcement and strengthening partnerships with the Association of Miners to properly register licensed operators.
Highlighting the connection between limited livelihood options and hazardous work conditions, the NUJ appealed to authorities to establish formal pathways that transition illegal miners into legal, safe operations and create more legitimate employment opportunities for local youths.
The union also urged relevant government agencies, mining organizations, and community leaders to collaborate on awareness campaigns about the operational and legal dangers of illegal mining.
Extending condolences to the families of the deceased, the NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to media oversight, public accountability, and the protection of human rights.
